My Thoughts on Overtraining

Overtraining and over reaching are two manageable/avoidable aspects of training.

Overtraining - “An accumulation of training and/or non-training stress resulting in long-term decrement of performance capacity with or without related physiological and psychological signs and symptoms of overtraining in which restoration of performance capacity may take several weeks or months,”  -Halson and Jeukendrup

Over Reaching - “An accumulation of training and non-training stressors that result in a short-term decrement in performance capacity with or without related physiological or psychological signs and symptoms of maladaptation in which restoration of performance may take ranging from days to several weeks to recover,” -Meeusen

Periodization along with a skilled coach should allow an athlete to train at a high level and avoid either of these potential detriments. I have found that through full disclosure provided by athlete/parent either overtraining/over reaching can be avoided.

Below I have attached an article that gives signs/symptoms and information on combating overtraining and over reaching.
